1. Hidden Images: Discovering Art through Infrared
What secrets can a painting hold beneath its surface? In this workshop,
participants will discover how conservators use infrared examination to
investigate paintings, revealing underlying drawings, inscriptions and traces of
an artwork's making. Guided by conservators from BARC Labs, you'll create your
own artwork with concealed layers before using infrared imaging to uncover the
surprise beneath.
2. Filling in the Blanks: The Art of Conservation
How do conservators restore a damaged artwork when parts of the original image
have been lost?
This is a workshop that introduces participants to the principles of visual reintegration and the thoughtful decisions that shape conservation practice. Guided by conservators from BARC Labs, participants will discover how retouching is used to reintegrate areas of loss while respecting the integrity of the original artwork. Through a hands-on exercise using Tratteggio and Mimetic techniques, participants will experience the careful balance between restoration, interpretation and preservation.
