Artist: Chai Chang Fung
Title: Yu-Lan Expression I & II
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size (cm): 90 x 160
Yu-Lan Expression I & II is inspired by the artist’s grandmother, both portraits depicting the subject as well as her namesake, a famous spring flower that is found in China.
The artist’s grandmother, who is in her late 80s, shares the same name as the Yu-Lan flower. Here, the artist places emphasis on showcasing the inner feelings and emotions of his grandmother by documenting her various expressions as she tends to her Yu-Lan flowers. Both portraits have similar backgrounds, but each one captures a distinct expression. The artist’s use of bold colours in thick acrylic conveys the intensity of his relationship with his grandmother, adding on another layer of understanding in our reading of his work.
