Title: The Elemental Kingdom
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size (cm): 203 x 152
The Elemental Kingdom is a culmination of different stacked figures. It aims to stimulate the viewer’s perception through intentional stacking and overlapping of figures and forms. They are overlaid and built above each other to bring about the idea of hierarchy.
Motifs of the masks are used as a representation of power dynamics – referencing façades, multiple and ever-changing personas. They are acceding and receding in the pictorial space, actively returning the gaze to the viewer to challenge the relationship between the observer and the observed.
Mr Tay graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore in 2018. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Singapore.
