Title: Presence/Absence

Size (cm): 134 x 170

In traditional Chinese landscape painting, the vacant emptiness left on the paper is as much a vital part of the painting’s composition as the painted forms of mountains and rivers.

Presence/Absence reinterprets this concept of empty space by taking the painted forms out and placing them on a physical plane. Modular and adaptable, these forms can be composed and re-composed according to the space they are in. Here, the wall where they hang takes the place of the ‘white’ of the paper. This negative space thus plays a key compositional role in determining how the forms engage with one another, challenging the idea of what painting is, and can be.
