Artist: Chanachai Wongpinphet
Title: Nostalgia and Yearning
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size (cm): 133 x 100
Nostalgia and Yearning is about the memories of the artist’s beloved aunt who had passed away. His aunt had taught his mother to make knitted fabric. The skill is passed on to the artist. The fabric represents memories of his aunt and that her presence is still felt. The artist used the tone of white because of his aunt’s name - “Khao” (meaning white) and depicts her death by wrapping a piece of knitted fabric on the body and head. The artist aims to provoke thoughts on death, bondage and lack of freedom through this artwork. In general context, knitted fabric provides warmth but here, it symbolises death.
Mr Wongpinphet is a third year art student at Department of Fine Art, Faculty of Architecture, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand. He hopes to engage in a conversation with viewers through his artwork.
