Artist: Phuan Thai Meng
Title: Imagined Home(land) IV
Medium: Mixed media on linen (Oil and thread)
Size (cm): 130 x 91
In Imagined Home(land) IV, the artist expresses his mixed and complex emotions towards ideas of family and the society.
Here, the central image is a torn portrait of a family of three held together by tape, suggesting the fragility of familial and societal ties. The three seemingly different looking people represent the diversity that is prevalent across Malaysia while the background is intentionally left empty to allow viewers to form their own interpretation and reading of the artwork.
Mr Phuan obtained his Diploma in Fine Art from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1996, and he has exhibited across South America, Europe and Asia. His works are also collected by the National Art Gallery Malaysia, Singapore Art Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) in Australia.
