Film is a commentary on the concept of the ideal body and the perception of beauty.
To the artist, the idea of a perfect body is a social construct, a reflection of our innate desire to achieve perfection as we become prisoners of our own bodies in our quest. Film materialises the very idea of the strive for a perfect body by showing it constricted in a transparent material – a material that is nothing on its own, yet constricting whatever it is laid upon. The result is a reflection of how beauty standards and perceptions manipulate the way we see ourselves and the way others see us.
Ms Phua is interested in matters of the human mind and the human anatomy, delving deep into perspectives that are rarely seen in order to forge personal relationships with the subject matter. As an artist, she aims to involve the viewer by surrounding, confronting and overwhelming them through her art.
