Title: Dongeng Tanah Surga (Heaven’s Fairy Tale)
Medium: Ink on canvas
Size (cm): 110 x 180
Heaven’s Fairy Tale tells the story of a suburban person witnessing his land being taken over by arrogant developers, consumed by the building of iron and concrete walls around it.
Here, the artist asks – if this land that carries a person’s hope for the future is no longer in his possession, where else can he put his hopes on? What will his children and grandchildren inherit? Should the legacy of the land be preserved instead of being treated like a ‘bedtime story’ that is told and forgotten? To the artist, only time will tell if these questions can be answered.
Mr Irmawan is a student at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His works often depict the urban life of his hometown in Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia, an industrial and metropolitan city that inspires him in his art practice.
