Artist: Niroj Jarungjitvittawat
Title: Contemplation 2
Medium: Tempera on wood
Size (cm): 180 x 180
In Contemplation 2, patterns and motifs take centre stage in a grid format. The repetition of colours, shapes and forms creates a sense of rhythm and movement across the artwork.
To achieve the colours of this artwork, traditional approaches were used, such as mixing colour powder with tamarind paste and using traditional gold lacquer on wood application methods. The result, however, is a contemporary interpretation of the design principles in art, with the rhythm and movement meant to reflect one’s breathing pattern and the use of repetition and patterns achieving a sense of orderliness and self-awareness.
Mr Jarungjitvittawat is an art professor in Poh-Chang Academy of Arts in Bangkok, Thailand. He has held solo and group exhibitions in China and Turkey, and was a finalist in the 2017 UOB Painting of the Year (Thailand) competition.
