Title: Back to Basic 08
Medium: Drawing on white clay filler on canvas
Size (cm): 124 x 172
Back to Basic 08 is inspired by small living things in nature that reflects the circle of life. The artist uses dragonfly as an analogy to demonstrate impermanence, life and death. Dragonfly is a delicate creature with a short lifespan-living in water during pupae stage before transforming into a winged beauty. The composition of the dragonfly with its head pointing downward, one shredded wing and the non-descriptive shadow in the water reflects the impermanence in life. The technique of drawing on charcoal dust in the Chinese style involves sharpening and applying the appropriate pressure on the black surface to create the drawing of the dragonfly as well as the details of the wings mixed with monochromatic tone.
Mr Thongkhajorn is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.
