From grocery shopping to seeing a doctor, to booking a ride or learning to code – all these (and more) can now be done from the comfort of your home. But for the millions of people spread across Indonesia’s remote islands, reliable mobile broadband access is not something they can take for granted. This has a direct impact on their daily lives, as our world gets ever more connected digitally.

Tower Bersama Group (TBG) is a leading independent telecommunications company based in Jakarta that aims to put quality Internet access in the hands of more Indonesians. It builds, buys and maintains telecommunications towers and leases the infrastructure space out to other telco operators.

Running an infrastructure-based business requires a lot of capital upfront. For example, its recent acquisition of 3,000 towers from PT Inti Bangun Sejahtera Tbk required funding of IDR 3,975 billion (US$280 million).

Discover how UOB’s cross-sectoral team supported Tower Bersama’s expansion plans and helped reduce its foreign exchange exposure risk, so that it can build a better connected, digitally-inclusive Indonesia.

Helmy Yusman Santoso (CFO, Tower Bersama):
Mobile phone connectivity is something many of us take for granted today, yet behind the scenes, there is a booming industry.

The Tower Bersama Group (TBG) is one of Indonesia’s largest independent telecommunication tower companies.

Our principal business is leasing space for antennas and other equipment for wireless signal transmission. We lease this to Indonesian telecommunications operators.

Our business is heavy on up-front capex to build new towers. We also need funding when we acquire existing towers to our portfolio for more leasing options. For example, we recently bought 3,000 towers from PT Inti Bangun Sejahtera Tbk, and in 2012 we bought 2,500 towers from Indosat.

UOB is one the few banks that understands the capital demands of the industry we are in.

Edwin Kadir (Head of Corporate Banking, UOB Indonesia):
UOB is a bank that connects businesses across Asia. We use our connected services to help our partners grow.

Tower Bersama’s revenue is primarily set in Indonesian Rupiah. However, spreading some of their funding in US dollars provides better liquidity.

By providing them with hedging options, we help them minimise their foreign exchange exposure risks.

Our funding experience is strengthened by a cross-sectoral team, allowing us to advise Tower Bersama on the best type of loan and bond instruments to suit their needs and the market.

    Helmy Yusman Santoso:
In the future, we want to continue increasing our tower capacity in order to maintain our status as one of the leading telecommunication tower providers in Indonesia.

We hope to continually expand our reach and quality so that everyone in Indonesia can enjoy faster and more stable mobile connectivity.

    Edwin Kadir:
UOB has extensive knowledge in the telco industry, both within Indonesia and in the region. This allows us to overcome obstacles not just in providing financial support, but also with solutions and advice.

    Helmy Yusman Santoso:
Funding remains a big driver of our business growth, so we appreciate having a banking partner who knows the industry, knows our business, and knows how to connect us with opportunities that keep us on the growth trajectory.

Helmy Yusman Santoso (CFO, Tower Bersama):

Edwin Kadir (Head of Corporate Banking, UOB Indonesia):

    Helmy Yusman Santoso:
Pendanaan tetap menjadi pendorong utama pertumbuhan bisnis kami.
