United Overseas Bank Hands Over More Than S$2 million To The Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund - Chinese Embassy

United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) today handed over more than S$2 million dollars to the Chinese Embassy towards rebuilding efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Sichuan, China.
This amount includes donations from Mr Wee Cho Yaw, the Bank, as well as staff from its Singapore and overseas offices. It also includes donations from other companies under the chairmanship of Mr Wee Cho Yaw.
The more than S$2 million donation is to help build a school in the earthquake affected area in Sichuan, China.
Explaining the decision to propose a school, Chairman of UOB Group, Mr Wee Cho Yaw said, "The earthquake and aftershocks in Sichuan have caused massive destruction and great loss of lives. We want to do our bit to help the younger survivors resume their educational pursuits. They represent the hope and pride of future Sichuan and China.
"Many schools have been destroyed in Sichuan. Hence, we have decided to designate our pool of funds towards the building of a new school when reconstruction begins."

* In addition, UOB staff in Greater China have donated S$59,411 towards aid agencies in China.
On 15 May 2008, UOB arranged for its customers to make direct donation to the Red Cross - China Relief Fund via the Bank's Personal Internet Banking portal. As at 31 May 2008, a total of S$683,941.16 has been received. The Bank also provided customers with the option of donating through quick cheque deposit as well as Red Cross donation tins placed at UOB Group branches.
