United Overseas Bank Limited Unveils The Best Of UOB

The Winning Works of the UOB Painting Of The Year
Over 26 Years Is Exhibited Collectively For The First Time

13 August 2007, Singapore

United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), with the support of the National Arts Council (NAC), are proud to present The Best Of UOB - The 26 Winning Works From The UOB Painting Of The Year Competition (1982 -2007) from 16 August to 8 October 2007, as part of the Singapore Art Show 2007.

The annual UOB Painting Of The Year (POY) Competition was launched in 1982 to encourage local visual artists to persist in their creative endeavours and to provide recognition for the best works. Today, the POY Competition has established itself as a premier event and an effective springboard for artists to develop their career.

Over the last 26 years, some of today's best Singapore artists were discovered through the POY Competition. The Best Of UOB brings together the creme de la creme paintings of these talented winners for the first time. Collectively, these paintings present a broad artistic exploration of Singapore artists over the last two and a half decades. The variety of approaches, styles, themes and techniques employed by the artists are not only indicative of various artistic trends and interests, but they also serve as markers in the field of art patronage and social shifts.

Mr Lim Chwee Seng, Director of Visual Arts and Resource Development at the NAC said, "The Best Of UOB is a vivid expression of the important role the UOB POY Competition has played over the years in grooming and featuring artistic talents in Singapore. We are delighted with UOB's participation in the Singapore Art Show 2007 and are confident this exhibition will be one of the highlights of this national visual arts performance.

On being part of the Singapore Art Show 2007, Mr Quak Hiang Whai, UOB's Head of Group Communications and Investor Relations said, "We were thrilled to be invited by NAC to co-organise The Best Of UOB with SAM as supporting the arts is one of the Bank's corporate social responsibility focus areas. Through this exhibition, we are able to share some of our art collection with the community, so that everyone gets a chance to appreciate some of the best works by Singapore artists."

"The Best Of UOB is undoubtedly one of the most significant exhibitions put up by any corporate organisation. In a way, the winning works trace the evolution of the local arts scene. Hence, it is especially meaningful to have The Best Of UOB as a parallel exhibition of the Singapore Art Exhibition," said Mr Kwok Kian Chow, Director of SAM.

The Best Of UOB - The 26 Winning Works From The UOB Painting Of The Year Competition (1982 -2007) will be held from 16 August to 8 October 2007 at SAM. As part of the exhibition, well-known winners like Mr Goh Beng Kwan and Mr Chua Ek Kay will also conduct talks cum demonstrations on 18 August 2007 and
1 September 2007 respectively at the SAM.
